Using Phototherapy to Treat Jaundice in Neonates

For over 30 years, phototherapy has been the gold-standard non-invasive treatment for neonatal jaundice. Blue light waves break down excess bilirubin, safely reducing yellowing of skin and eyes. While hospitals traditionally use overhead UV lights, our phototherapy blankets offer adjustable intensity—allowing continuous, doctor-approved home treatment until bilirubin levels normalize.

How is it diagnosed?

Your child’s doctor will look for signs of jaundice, and ask questions about birth weight, weight gain and feeding.

A screening test with a specialised light called a transcutaneous bilirubinometer is sometimes used on your baby’s chest to get an approximate measure of the jaundice.

A blood test to measure the level of bilirubin in your baby’s blood, called serum bilirubin level (SBR), may be ordered. This is the most accurate way to measure an SBR and involves collecting a small amount of blood from the arm, hand or heel. Additional blood tests or urine tests may be ordered if there is evidence your baby’s jaundice is caused by an underlying disorder that will need treatment.

Treatment

Mild jaundice often goes away without treatment, however babies with high levels of bilirubin may need treatment. Treatment may include phototherapy, exchange transfusion or medication.

Blood test

For the duration of the phototherapy treatment, your baby would need daily blood tests to check the bilirubin levels for the severity of jaundice.

The results of the blood tests will be directly sent to our panel Neonatologist (Newborn specialist doctor), who will advise you through the text message regarding the ceasing or continuing the phototherapy treatment.

These blood tests are all organised automatically at the time of booking of the phototherapy blankets.  They are done through our trusted partners: Saturn Pathology.

They specialise in Mobile Blood Collection services for your convenience of your home and are bulk billed through Medicare.
